The Mississippi river runs through our city, and going over to the University, early in the morning, there used to be a view from a bridge that I was very fond of. It was always misty in the morning, the fog hanging low over the cold-looking water which brooded away below the bridge. Five hundred yards to the south the stream turned east against a hill, dipping low and protesting under an intruding grove of trees. In the mornings, with the mist and the cold and the deep sullen grayness of the water, it was wistful and impressive. I had that view as one of the little secret things everyone has, that seem to mean something, that you never remember perfectly and you never quite forget. It was part of a mystery and a promise to me for a long time.”

This is an old, old trick. “It’s used in ziggurats, even. It creates a space that emphasizes your smallness when you walk in. You look at something far away, and that makes your body feel like you’re entering somewhere sacred or holy.”

We do not need an entirely new metropolis, we simply need new ways to experience the one that is already here. If the real Los Angeles always seems both notoriously hard to access and deliberately concealed from public view, it could simply be because we don't walk enough.

People come to know the world the way they come to map it—through their perceptions of how its elements are connected and of how they should move among them. Folks getting out and enjoying a bicycle ride on quiet neighborhood streets or the multi-use paths is a good thing. People on an ultra-light bicycle wheeling along a 30 mph road next to Suburbans and F350 landscaper rigs is quite the opposite. I’ve been around enough to know the arguments before I even hear them, that safe drivers and safe bicyclists doing what they’re supposed to should make for a happy mix. That’s pure fantasy. EMT’s, police, fire fighters and funeral home directors deal in stark reality. So will the loved ones of John Q Super-Commuter exercising his right to use those lanes when something goes wrong. I’d shorten any argument on this with a simple illustration. Hold a can of soup in one hand and a raw egg in the other. Smack them together and my point is made.
